It is intended for native speakers who may not yet have an outstanding knowledge of foreign languages, cultures, and social situations both in a target language and in the source language and who wish to become bilingual professional.
“Career using languages” is a 2 hour class where participants will have the opportunity to find out how to use their language skills: Translator, interpreter, publishing & editorial, teacher or language tutor? These language specialists, all use language skills, but in a different way depending on their personal attitudes or professional demand. The range of careers requiring some language competence is constantly increasing, and during this course, participants will have the opportunity to examine a wide range of choices, with testimonials from experts and business people, and receive advice from them. You will also look at your other skills and interests which are needed for a job, not just your language ability. Even specialist language jobs require many more skills than the ability to speak one or more foreign languages. It also provides an understanding of cultural and linguistic problems that may arise and how to avoid them.

Advanced Course - Overview of the advanced course - Translation Studies (European languages and cultures pathway). This is and Interpreting and Translating class that is an advanced programme that is given in a semester or two.
The number of bilingual and multilingual communities and workplaces are on the rise, and language planning is a field of growing importance. For this reason, there is an increased demand for individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to put in place effective strategies and systems that promote linguistic equality. Considering that ‘language' becomes a priority for many fields - development, planning, education, insurance, research, health, IT, marketing; staff in a wide range of professions require an understanding of and skills in language planning. Furthermore, there is a huge potential to further increase the demand for qualified personnel to address language-related issues and also to create new and different demands in the current world market.
This course is designed for people who are proficient in more than one language and would like to start a career as translators, for translators who would like to develop their skills in areas such as translation technology and terminology management and for linguists interested in translation and cross-cultural communication as an area of study. It will be given all information tools to prepare linguists for careers in several areas of specialised language work in which there is a rapidly growing demand for highly trained speakers of English, both in the USA and abroad.
All students follow a core programme involving professional translation and simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpreting, supplemented by background sessions on topics such as international law, literature and economics. Bia offers two options available to allow students to specialise more in a specific discipline:
“Translation and Language Technologies” more based on Business Studies or “Translation: European Languages and Cultures”, based in the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music. Both pathways share four core modules, Introduction to Translation, Translation Technology, Research Skills and the Dissertation or Extended Translation Project. All of which related to media, politics, cultural studies and linguistics and with specialist translation modules depending of the language pair chosen. In order to extend the knowledge of Modern European languages and cultures, it will prepare the participants to understand how to build a successful career in translation or related professions.
Everyone will take part in interactive seminars, presentations and group work as well as attending lectures and tutorials. There are also opportunities for individual research and guided study.
I may teach some courses in Portuguese, French, Italian and Spanish, which means that these students will be at a real advantage when it comes to gaining maximum benefit and experience from abroad. This class is awarded for a 15,000-word dissertation project submitted after successful completion of the complete programme.
Requirement: Fluency in English plus another language equivalent to Advanced Higher/A Level in both oral and written skill
